有人缺乏信心,就會有人自信太過,第二個障礙修聖諦現觀的就是「上慢」,未證得而謂已證得。佛陀為了斷除如是上慢,便說諦現觀的難度不但要比以箭射箭,後一箭射中前一箭的箭尾,筈筈無遺,還要來得困難,甚至比「以毛穿毛」(毛「矛贊」毛端),端端不落,還要困難。毛是否能夠貫穿毛,並不是重點,佛陀告訴阿難,貫穿四聖諦甚至比這還難。And they, Ananda, pierce what is even harder to pierce, those who pierce, as it actually is present, that 'This is stress'; who pierce, as it actually is present, that 'This is the origination of stress'... 'This is the cessation of stress'... 'This is the path of practice leading to the cessation of stress.'
這怎麼說?論母云:「由即以其能取作意,還即通達能取作意,如是方有能緣所緣平等平等無漏智生通達諦理。」毛端以喻能取作意,最細最難,見到所見是無常、苦、非我,又能見到這樣的見地也並沒有什麼了不起,一樣是無常、苦、非我,這樣一直下去,筈筈無遺、端端不落,便不會障礙修習諦現觀。
